Every now and again I come across a brand that I instantly fall in love with. Novel Supply Co was one of those brands. The Vancouver based, #girlboss run company is the west coast clothing brand of our dreams: beautiful and thoughtful clothing made sustainably. I have so much to say about this brand that I had to add headings, so get ready:
Love at first sight does exist when it comes to Novel Supply Co.
I was scrolling through Instagram while sitting on the train home after a long day of work when Novel popped up on my feed. Right away I fell in love with their logo featuring a minimalist mountain design and started checking out (read: obsessing over) the rest of their insta feed. Novel occupies a unique niche in the clothing market as their items are truly designed for the urban adventurer. Their designs would fit in perfectly for a hike in the mountains then transition into a relaxed and stylish look for drinks on a rooftop patio downtown. Despite spending this summer in a foot cast, I’ve been wearing Novel everywhere: a music festival, under a blazer at work, out running errands on the weekend and for plenty of walks with the pup. I swear I have got complements everywhere I’ve been including in the line at Costco. It’s tough to find clothes that are that versatile and keep you looking stylish no matter where life takes you.
In addition to Novel’s logo mountain apparel, they have a variety of other designs including a bike with “chase the urban adventure”, an adorable “west coast survival guide” featuring a surfboard, sunnies, boots and more, a campfire with “kumbaya” and more.
My absolute favourite item from Novel is their Nov3l Cabin Crew sweater. As mentioned above, all of Novel’s clothes are sustainable and the fabric of their sweaters is where the difference in fabric feel is most noticeable. This is hard to describe, but the fabric feels real and raw in the best possible way. The sweaters are made with fleecy hemp and organic cotton and all of Novel’s products are 100% toxins free. When you think about the length of time we spend in our clothes each day, keeping toxins away from our clothing and off our bodies makes a lot of sense.
Novel’s tanks are made with organic cotton and hemp also.
Okay, one more thing I have to gush about: all of their items are gender neutral. I don’t even think you’ll find any dichotomizing words on their entire site. I really believe in gender neutrality in most things in life and there is absolutely no reason why tees and tanks can’t be made for everyone.
Novel’s founder and designer, Kaya Dorey, is a very accomplished entrepreneur. Kaya has a passion for sustainability that was sparked during environmental courses that she took in university. The idea for Novel began when Kaya went hunting around Vancouver for sustainable clothing. Despite finding some options, none were really her aesthetic or style. Instead of giving up, Kaya came up with a solution and alas Novel Supply Co. was born. If running an amazing clothing company wasn’t impressive enough, Kaya was also a finalist for UN’s Young Champions of the Earth program!
Kaya doesn’t know this yet, but I’m going to force her to let me take her for coffee next time I’m in Vancouver to learn more about her story and her goals for Novel. She is truly a trailblazer in sustainable fashion and helping our environment.
